چکیده

Electron beams are strongly microbunched near the high-gain free-electron laser (FEL) saturation with a rich harmonic content in the beam current. While the coherent harmonic emission is possible in a planar undulator, the thirdharmonic radiation typically dominates with about 1% of the fundamental power at saturation. In this paper, we discuss the second-harmonic radiation in the Linac Coherent Light Source. We show that by a suitable design of an secondstage undulator with its fundamental frequency tuned to the second harmonic of the first undulator, coherent second-harmonic radiation much more intense than the third-harmonic is emitted. Numerical simulations predict that GW-level, subAngstrom x-ray pulses can be generated in a relatively short second-harmonic radiator. BNL - 68542 High Gain Harmonic Generation X-ray Free Electron Laser

We present the calculation on the performance of a High Gain Harmonic Generation (HGHG) X-ray Free Electron Laser (FEL) based on the high quality electron beam from the proposed Photoinjected Energy Recovery Linac (PERL) at the NSLS. We consider several sets of e-beam parameters. The calculation indicates that it is possible to produce a fully coherent FEL with a wavelength around 10 Angstrom, ...

Considerably Enhanced Second-Harmonic Generation in Resonant U-Shaped Nano-Structures

In this paper, we perform a detailed study of the spectral response of the gold U-shaped nano-structures for different geometrical parameters and polarizations in order to obtain significant localization factor in the wavelength 1.55 μm. The obtained near-field distribution of electric fields reveals that resonances in these nano-structures correspond to the even and odd plasmonic modes dependi...

Start-End Simulations for the LCLS X-Ray Free-Electron Laser

The LCLS Free-Electron Lasers operates in the wavelength range of 1.5 15 Angstrom, using an electron beam with an energy between 4.5 and 14.5 GeV. The generation of the electron beam, the preservation of its brightness during acceleration and compression, and the amplification of the spontaneous radiation within the FEL can only be described by a consistent set of simulation codes. We present t...

The LCLS X-ray FEL at SLAC

The design status and R&D plan of a 1.5 Å SASE-FEL at SLAC, called the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), are described. The LCLS utilizes one third of the SLAC linac for the acceleration of electrons to about 15 GeV. The FEL radiation is produced in a long undulator and is directed to an experimental area for its utilization. The LCLS is designed to produce 300 fsec long radiation pulses at t...

Optimization for Single-spike X-ray Fels at Lcls with a Low Charge Beam*

The Linac Coherent Light Source is an x-ray freeelectron laser at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, which is operating at x-ray wavelengths of 20-1.2 Angstrom with peak brightness nearly ten orders of magnitude beyond conventional synchrotron radiation sources. At the low charge operation mode (20 pC), the xray pulse length can be <10 fs. In this paper we report our numerical optimizati...
